Hello and Thank you for reading my Bio! I was first introduced to MHFA in my regular full time role working in post-secondary education. I realised I needed more tools in my toolbox to help the students coming to see me. At the start of the course I was asked: What are your expectations of the course and what would make someone more and less likely to offer MHFA? My answers were simple and not uncommon: I noticed someone was struggling or in distress but did not have the confidence and was worried that I would say/do the wrong thing and make things worse. Therefore my expectation of the course was to provide me with some knowledge about mental health and a tips to follow so I could ask questions, start a conversation and offer support. By the end of the course not only were my expectations met but I believed so much in it, I asked to become a facilitator so I could provide the tools to my colleagues and students! MHFA provided me with the confidence to ask questions to assess situations, reinforced the power of listening and holding space with someone and raised my awareness of resources that could be accessed by those who need them. Additionally, MHFA helped me identify my boundaries and the importance of self care. I am proud to say that I have been a MHFA facilitator since 2016. Each and every course fills my cup. I learn something during each class and am grateful for the time, energy and willingness to help others that each participant brings to the class. I am also a LivingWorks safeTALK Suicide Alert facilitator and have completed the LivingWorks ASIST and Start programs. Please reach out to me if you would like more information about upcoming courses. Laura
