Some important things to note:

-The course comes with access to an online viewable PDF of the reference guide. You can access this for 365 days from the date you sign up for Module 1. You cannot download it. You can order a hard copy of the reference guide from the Opening Minds platform once you register for Module 1.

-You must be present for the entire course in order to receive a certificate.

-Please have a working camera and microphone. You are asked to keep your camera on for the entirety of the training if possible. This is an interactive training and we will be participating in group discussions.

-If you arrive late to the course, you may be asked to participate in a later session to avoid disruptions to the group. You may not miss more than 30 minutes of face to face training. Doing so will require you to repeat the training at a later date.

-There will be a support person trained in MHFA with us the entire time. They are there to help with technology issues but they are also to provide extra support should you need it anytime during the training.

-I advise letting at least one support person know you are taking the training and asking them to be available should you need to debrief about the training as the content can be heavy for some and we all come to the training with different life experiences.

-I will remain on zoom for 30 minutes each day to provide extra support, answer questions or debrief, should you need it.

-If you need special accommodations to make the learning experience better for you please reach out and let me know. I will do my best to accommodate.

ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID

“Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the support provided to a person who may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being or a mental health crisis. The Mental Health Commission of Canada reports that one in every five Canadians experiences a mental health problem within a given year. While we often know a lot about physical illness, there tends to be less knowledge about mental health or substance use problems. This lack of understanding leads to fear and negative attitudes towards individuals living with these problems. It prevents people from seeking help for themselves and from providing appropriate support to people around them” – MHCC

MHFA is an international program active in over 20 countries. Research has shown that this evidence-based course offers significant positive impacts for participants and their workplaces, communities, and families, namely:

  • Significantly greater recognition of the most common mental health problems
  • Decreased social distance from people with mental health problems
  • Increased confidence in providing help to others
  • Improved mental health of the MHFA participant her/himself  – MHCC
