 This on-day MHFA workshop is organized for community leaders, local religious leaders, community elders, and first responders who daily interact with African community members.  After successful completion of this training, participants will be able to develop:
  • Enhanced Awareness: Gain vital insights to recognize early signs of mental well-being decline.
  • Open Communication: Develop the skills to discuss mental health openly and without fear.
  • Comprehensive Knowledge: Learn about various professional and informal supports for recovery and mental well-being.
  • Confidence Building: Boost confidence in reaching out and utilizing available support systems.
  • Crisis Management: Acquire essential tools to assist effectively during mental health or substance use crises.
  • Self-Care Skills: Understand and apply MHFA actions to maintain your own mental wellness.
Course Outline for participants
  • Module 1: Self-Directed (2 Hours): An introductory module that lays the foundation of MHFA actions.
  • Module 2: Live Classroom (3.5 hours): Focuses on applying MHFA actions in scenarios of declining mental well-being and adapting conversations for diverse groups.
  • Module 3: Live Classroom (3.5 hours): Enhances skills in crisis management and highlights the importance of self-care.

Empowering Through ALGES Participants will learn the five core actions of ALGES:

  • Assess the risk of suicide and/or harm
  • Listen non-judgmentally
  • Give reassurance
  • Encourage professional support
  • Self- Care 

Participants will be able to gain an understanding and tools to handle:

  • Suicidal behavior
  • Panic attacks
  • Overdoses
  • Acute stress reactions
  • Psychotic episodes

At the end of this training, participants will be awarded certificates of attendance by the Mental Health Commission of Canada.  We have enough participants registered for this workshop and have no available space for any individual interested.
