Course Information

The course will be taught by Camilla Bjurling.  Cami (preferred) is a Registered Clinical Counsellor who is one of the Mental Health Team Leads at Trinity Western University and works in Private Practice at Tidal Trauma Centre. Cami is passionate about giving people the tools that will help them feel empowered to help in any Mental Health situation.

This is a private course for the staff & faculty of TWU. This will enhance the ability of staff and faculty to respond to a mental health crisis that a student may be experiencing. It will help them direct the student to the proper resources on campus as well as what to do if the student is in need of imminent support.

This course includes how to care for oneself after encountering a mental health crisis situation. This course is here to support the Employees, Faculty and students of TWU to ensure our campus is a place of respect, resources, and resiliency.

Course Outline:

Module 1 is taken online, self-directed and concludes with a quiz. You will need to email Cami the completion of the quiz a week before the virtual in class portion. You will need to complete this to move forward onto the virtual training for Module 2 & 3 over zoom.

Module 1: Self-Directed – online (approximately 1-1.5 hours)

  • Introduction to the course
  • Introduction to MHFA key terms and concepts; stigma on mental well-being; range of changes that may indicate a decline in Mental well-being & the principle of acronym ALGES to assess.

Module 2: In person (3.5 hours)

  • Review of Module 1
  • Practice applying MHFA actions to situations of declining mental well-being
  • Guidelines & strategies for MHFA respectful communication to diverse populations

Module 3: In person (3.5 hours)

  • Review of Module 2
  • Responding to possible challenges
  • Using ALGES for your own self-care
  • Practice using MHFA actions in crisis situations
