The Space We Make: Living the Change We Want to See

Every day, in classrooms, offices, and communities across the country, people are finding ways to show up—with compassion, with curiosity, and with care. Even when things feel messy or uncertain, we see people making space for one another.

Every day, in classrooms, offices, and communities across the country, people are finding ways to show up—with compassion, with curiosity, and with care. Even when things feel messy or uncertain, we see people making space for one another.

And that matters. Because while we may not control everything happening around us, we do control how we respond. We each have a space—a sphere of influence—where we can act with intention. Where we can live in a way that reflects the world we want to see. How we show up—for ourselves and for others—shapes the culture around us.

What Is The Space We Make?

Our new campaign, The Space We Make, is rooted in a powerful idea: while we can’t always control what’s happening around us, we can choose what we contribute to it. We all have influence—in ourselves, between one another, and in the environments we’re part of.

That influence can be used to make space.
Space for listening.
Space for learning.
Space for unlearning.
Space for growth.

This campaign is an invitation to recognize the choices we do have, and to use them with intention. To reflect on how we interact with others, how we care for ourselves, and how we make everyday decisions that move us closer to the world we want to live in.

It Takes Intention—and It’s Worth It

Making space doesn’t require a grand gesture. It’s about the habits we build, the language we use, and the tone we set in the spaces we move through every day. It can take courage to start a new conversation. It can take energy to keep showing up in a way that reflects our values. And it can take practice to do things differently than we’ve always done them.

But every time we make space—for empathy, for curiosity, for others to feel seen—we help shift the environment around us. We set a new tone. We show what’s possible.

This isn’t about calling anyone out. It’s about calling ourselves in. It’s about small, meaningful actions that build stronger, more caring communities—at work, at school, at home, and beyond.

This Campaign Is for Everyone

The Space We Make isn’t a title or a personality type. It’s a mindset. A practice. A commitment to acting with care, even when things are moving fast. It’s for anyone who wants to help make their corner of the world more understanding, more open, and more supportive.

It’s about the space within us, where we build self-awareness, care, and reflection.
The space between us, where trust is built and relationships grow.
And the space around us, where our daily choices shape the cultures we’re part of.

At Opening Minds, we’ve trained over a million people in evidence-based programs that help build awareness, reduce stigma, and support resilience. What we’ve learned is that real change is not about reacting perfectly in a crisis—it’s about building better habits every day.

The Space We Make Is Ours to Shape

You don’t need to be perfect. You don’t need to be fearless. You just need to be willing—to pause, to ask, to listen, to act with care.

Because when we make space for understanding, we begin to replace judgment with connection.
When we make space for reflection, we start to notice what we want to grow.
When we make space for others, we open possibilities for change.

And when enough of us do that, we begin to model the kind of world we believe in.

So, let’s start there.
Let’s choose to make space.
Let’s live as the world should be, to show it what it can be.

Together, we can open minds—and explore new possibilities for how we live, learn, work, and connect.
